BLOW UP

CRYSTAL CASTLES EXPLAIN CANCELLED DALLAS GIG
For all those who were at Monday's sold out Crystal Castles show in Austin consider yourselves lucky - turns out that the band's scheduled set the next night at Dallas' Granada Theater was cancelled at the last minute! Horrible news indeed! Here's the word straight from the band's management:

"After witnessing the CC soundcheck, the owner of the club was afraid that CC would "blow up the soundsystem" and the show was cancelled, after three hours of arguing."

Unfortunate stuff here Cannibal Cheerleader faithful, but let it be made clear, the band clearly had no control over this situation. While there will obviously be ire and indignation from the sold-out would-be audience, it wasn't for lack of trying that Crystal Castles didn't get to rampage in Dallas. Here's hoping they come back soon to a stage with less of an alarmist manager.

UPDATE!!

We reported this morning that Crystal Castles were not allowed to play their Dallas gig because the venue was afraid CC would "blow up the soundsystem". However, looks like Mike Schoder of the Granada Theater is flipping the story on the band, offering this to say (via):

"Let me start with a definition:
Prima donna:
Prima donnas cannot help the way they are because their parents spoiled them and they are still developing their personalities.
All a prima donna has to do is whine and their parents give them what they want.

Here's how our day went at the Granada on Tue:
Vega (Alan from Ghosthustler) opened for CC in Austin Monday night.
At 5pm (3 hrs before doors) we received a call from CC that Vega could not be on the bill.
Vega had been approved by CC in advance for the bill.
Early on Tue CC hired a light tech from Austin that is also a DJ to replace Vega.
CC could have communicated with Vega early in the day before they left Austin.
Vega was at the Granada waiting to soundcheck.
CC would not enter the building until Vega was gone from the premise.
Alan was super cool. No prima donna.
We've never seen this request. The other co-promoter out of Austin has never seen this kind of request.
CC whining...
CC soundchecked at 6pm instead of at 4pm.
CC didn't "like the sound of their kickdrum".
CC insists that "more woofers be brought in".
Rental places close at 6pm.
It is now 7pm.
Granada has 16 - 18" sub-woofers and 12 - 15" sub-woofers. Also 32 - 8" midranges. Lots of firepower.
Sound check was great.
CC says they would rather cancel the show than possibly not have enough kick drum.
Granada begs that the show goes on.
Granada even offers to dismantle sub woofer stacks and place them in different places in the room.
Granada was willing to do anything to have the show go on.
CC waits until after 10pm to give final cancellation.

The show must go on. Life is all perception. One person sees the day as beautiful, another sees the day as crap.
Why would any band crap on their fans like this?
Insecurity is a cancer. Love yourself. Love your sound guy and the system at the club you are playing.
Play the show. Then listen to your fans. If you don't like the sound at a club never go back to the club.
We've had every big band imaginable in every genre imaginable and had amazing shows.
Nobody has complained about our sound. This is totally out of left field.
The sound at Granada is amazing...and would have been if CC would have just got on stage and played.

Today Granada is refunding ticket cost and entire service charge to each patron.
No one cares for live music more than we do. We've put together an amazing room, staff and sound system.
We'll see you soon fellow music fans.

Mike Schoder and all the Staff at Granada."

Still MORE interesting is Crystal Castles' further response to this whole mangled mess. They say:

"CC obviously did not want to leave 1000+ people hanging outside. The people at Granada pulled the plug on CC during CC's soundcheck, claiming they feared CC would "blow the soundsystem." The people at Granada tried to rent (at the last minute) proper speakers that would not "blow" for the show but it just couldn't happen on short notice. At one point they thought they had found professional speakers but 2 hours later this fell through and the decision was made that the show could not happen. Also of note, a DJ had blown their speakers a few weeks ago and they did not want this to happen again. They said they couldn't afford to repair the speakers again. It would be nice if you knew the truth and were fair to the band since this wasn't their fault. The blame goes to whoever booked this band at this ill-equipped venue."

So who can we believe in this story? The true answer will probably lie in a mixture of the two stories. Undoubtedly Crystal Castles would want proper speakers for their kickdrum and the Granada couldn't supply, saying the kind of speakers they had would 'blow' the soundsystem. Now it's turned into a game of he-said-she-said and we may never get the story straight. Apparently Granada is giving refunds to everyone's credit cards who ordered online and Crystal Castles is off to Coachella. We think this probably isn't the last we'll hear about this Crystal Cancels story, but we'll keep you up to date folks!

This is an absolute lie.

CC has been making great pains to spin this in their favor.

But they are absolutely lying through their teeth and you'd be a fool to believe them. They have a history of doing this.

Pretty terrible people.

I waited in that line for 3 hours, it was ridiculous. The above commenter says that CC's story is a lie, but I wish he would eleborate.

The Granada Theater has one of the best sound systems in Dallas....CC are full of shit so stop marking out for them

If the Granada sound system couldn't handle them there is no club that size in Texas that could. So, they need to think up another story to tell.

That is stupid. Like they can only play at a ridiculous volume that will blow The Granada's system (which is a ludicrous idea) or they won't play at all? Absolutely unacceptable. Divas.

I know a Granada employee. He said that CC didn't like the way their drums sounded. CC can fuck off. I tried to start a riot, but everybody was too pale and too skinny.

Here's what the Granada says, http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/dc9/2009/04/granada_owner_mike_schoder_off.php#more

After going to more shows than I can imagine at the Granada and only having very positive experiences there, I will give the Granada the benefit of the doubt.

I don't really give a shit who's fault it was. I'm in this for 4 tickets... some direction as to how to get a refund would be nice.

Details on ticket refunds should be up on the venue's webiste sometime shortly, according to the Granada owner.

As for the he said/he said on last night's cancellation, I'm glad I wasn't there.

I can, just like a few other posters here, attest to the quality of sound at the venue: its pretty good.

I've seen just about any and every type of music in that venue and its never been a problem. Bands play loud in there and bands play quiet in there.

Our local weekly, The Dallas Observer, posted the owner's response to the cancellation.

The short of it is that CC refused to enter the venue while the opener was there. The opener was accused of stealing a pedal from them the night before in Austin.

They sound checked 2hrs late and weren't satisfied with the sound of their KICK DRUM.

They didn't let the venue know they were cancelling until 10pm, while 1000+ people were inside.

We all like our musicians with a bit of an attitude and edge. However, treating fans with such disregard isn't a quality any of us appreciate.

These little shits need to remember how they got to the point they are at and adjust their attitudes or they won't be going much further.

Lets see where they're at in a year.

I am a venue manager for the Granada Theater, and have worked here for going on 5 years.

Our sound system is awesome.

Zakk Wylde has played it. Obituary has played it. Both System of a Down and Serj Tankian have played it.

There's nothing Crystal Castles could possibly do to hurt our system.

Get real.

Speaking as someone who was at the Zakk Wylde/BLS show, there is no way this band could have blown the sound system based on the shit on their myspace.

Totally agree with it having the best sound system in Dallas, will be there tomorrow night for Amon Amarth.

Oh I posted the full story on the Cannibal Cheerleader blog so I didn't want to direct people elsewhere, don't mean to offend. I posted a link back to my site in your comments section too so we're even now! :D

as an actual "sound man" I suspect the reality is somewhere in the middle. Electronic "musicians" and I use the term lightly..are notorious for misusing electronic keyboards for effect. Nothing wrong with that..but the levels that come off this equipment and purity of sounds created artificially, can and do destroy sound systems if great care is not used, no matter the size. It's not about perceived volume..it's how much continuous energy is hitting the amplifiers and where the spikes in the audio material are. A limiter is usually placed on the mains so you cannot peak past a certain level. IF the artist continues to try to push the level beyond that point..the system will reduce the audio level automatically, effectively squashing the sound and therefore making the kick drum "sound like shit" in this instance due to over compression. The owner of the club had every right to protect his equipment from abuse on the DJ's part, and the group should learn to stop acting like people in production are somehow their stern parents or enemies. Grow up. There was more than enough system for that room. YOU bailed in a hissy fit 1000 of your fans who actually appreciate beep and blurp nonsense. To the people at the venue..it's another show they want to be successful..both for you and them. Get some perspective or you will quickly go nowhere.

So lets take a second to look back at this bands history. They have canceled shows before and have made their fans go home without any music.

So last night is just another example of why you SHOULD NOT support this band. Being in a band it seems like these days means you can put up a computer, loop some beats, and use pro tools to hide the lack of music ability you have. The popular music of today has no soul, no true love for the spirit of music. Which goes back to this band who canceled a sold out show, a SOLD OUT SHOW that tons of bands would kill to have.

Bands like Crystal Castles have no respect for music and no respect for others.

Knowing the venue and everyone who works there the show was in NO WAY CANCELED BY GRANADA THEATER.

GRANADA THEATER, was open and ready to rock just like they always are, they were ready to serve you with a friendly smile, good vibes and feel good time.

I mean lets stop to think about this why would a venue cancel after they have already opened? Venues don't cancel! They have to much money already spend to cancel. Like paying the promoters, paying people to make fliers and poster, paying the staff, even something as small as turning on the electricity in a place with that much space and sound/lighting equipment. It doesnt take that much common sense to figure out that when a show is canceled ITS BC OF THE BAND.

Lets just say Crystal Castles will be lucky to get a show anywhere in Dallas and the surrounding areas after this stunt.

Making your fans stand outside in the streets huddle next to each other and waiting for a show because they are sound checking for 8 hours, yes kids 8 hours and still producing nothing but the walk of shame is ridiculous and unprofessional.

If you decide to keep supporting this band, I pray that one day you will find good taste in people who dont suck at life.

you guys gotta do better than you're doing.

I was in line at the show, and CC came out (minus Alice- who we never saw) and told us about the sound system complaint. Problem was, they never apologized to anyone, whatsoever. They just hung around waiting for the crew to finish loading equipment. They left the dirty work up to Granada, and to quote their doorman, "I'm the most hated guy out here right now." If it's any cold comfort doorman- read these comments: Crystal Castles had/has that title.

Granada's already refunded the tickets and made the free ticket offer- what did CC do?

word- absolutely a lie.... lets put it this way.... people with real bangers and have used that system sans complaints... and CC is tight... but they dont play bangers or wobblers so yeah... bitch move kids!
